Final Fantasy XIV has had a rocky start on PC, which has pushed its PlayStation 3 incarnation back. With the next generation looming, producer Naoki Yoshida says that it’s possible the game will be put on the presumed PlayStation 4. But, he notes that delivering on the promise of the PS3 version takes priority.

“As you know, our goal as a developer and company is we want as many people to play this game as possible,” Yoshida told Eurogamer. “If that means when a new piece of hardware comes out–if putting our game on that piece of hardware means that we’ll get to reach out to new people, then we definitely want to do that.

“But the first thing that we have is, we made a promise to our players that we are going to release this on PlayStation 3. So we must first fulfill that promise. That is our first goal. We must work as hard as we can to fulfill the promise that we made to the players.”

The game has been released on PC, but Square Enix is currently working on a large-scale 2.0 update that will destroy and reboot the world in 2013. The PlayStation 3 version will launch starting at version 2.0. In the meantime, Square is keeping the engines running on its PC game with incentive programs.

Yoshida also played coy with any mention of the next PlayStation. “Sony has to first come out and say that there actually is [a PlayStation 4],” he said. “We have to wait for that.”
