Activision has announced that it will be making a licensed video game based on the upcoming movie adaptation of the Battleship board game. Interestingly, they’ve hired Double Helix to helm the project, whose resume includes Front Mission Evolved for Square Enix and GI Joe: Rise of Cobra for EA.

Coming first to PS3 and Xbox 360, Battleship will be a “standalone” story that combines strategic naval command with “first-person action gameplay.” Yes, Battleship is turning into a first-person shooter.

According to the press release, Battleship will allow players to “seamlessly” switch between the first-person battlefield and the “Battle Command” overview map. “Combining naval strategy simulation with first-person shooter gameplay, players fend off the enemy beachside while ordering attacks against their marine counterparts,” the announcement reads.

If that doesn’t sound like an accurate recreation of the board game you played as a kid, it’s because the movie looks less like Battleship, and more like Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. Here’s the Super Bowl trailer:

The Teen-rated Battleship will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360 on May 15th, just a few days before the movie’s May 18th release. “Uniquely designed versions” rated E10+ from developer Magic Pockets will also be made for Wii, 3DS, and DS.
