Nintendo has announced the acquisition of video codec company Mobiclip. The Paris, France-based company was acquired in October. According to the company’s official website: “Mobiclip is a Research and Development center specialized in the field of highly optimized software technologies. We are committed to provide the gaming industry with the latest innovations in middleware.”

Mobiclip technology will be used in upcoming games on the 3DS and Wii U.

According to GI.biz, Mobiclip had previously offered its technology on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. The goal of the acquisition will be to provide “high-quality video with low battery consumption.” It’s likely that the technology has already been deployed on a number of 3DS efforts, such as Nintendo Video. The growing Nintendo Network will likely give more opportunity to expand the platform.
