Apple announced a new iPad at a press event today in San Francisco. The successor to the iPad 2 will use the Retina Display for a striking 2048×1536 resolution. It will be hitting stores on March 16 at various price points.

Gizmodo reports that the device carries an A5X quad-core processor, 4G capabilities, and 10 hours of battery life (reduced to 9 hours with 4G). It’s said to be four times as powerful as the previous iPad. The 16 GB model will start at $499, with the 32 GB at $599 64 GB at $699. The 4G connected models increase to $629, $729, and $829, respectively. It weighs in at 1.5 pounds and .37 inches thick.

The Verge reports that to show off the capabilities of the device, Apple brought out Epic president Mike Capps. He debuted a new game titled Infinity Blade Dungeons, a follow-up to the popular Infinity Blade franchise made to take advantage of the increased hardware power. While Apple was cagey on specs, Capps mentioned that the device has more memory than the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

Other (non-gaming) features of the new iPad include a camera, social sharing functions for photos, and 1080p video recording.
